Treatment Process

Understanding the Implant Procedure

Dental implant treatment at Brandon Dental Clinic follows a clear, structured process:

01

Step 1 — Assessment & Planning

Your consultation includes a clinical examination, X-rays, and a detailed discussion of your suitability and treatment goals. We use the latest imaging technology to plan implant placement with accuracy.

02

Step 2 — Implant Placement

The implant post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. The procedure is straightforward, and most patients are pleasantly surprised by how little discomfort they experience.

03

Step 3 — Osseointegration

The implant is left to fuse naturally with the surrounding bone. This typically takes between eight and sixteen weeks, depending on the individual.

04

Step 4 — Abutment & Crown Fitting

Once integration is confirmed, a connecting piece called an abutment is fitted, followed by your custom-made crown. The crown is matched precisely to the size, shape, and shade of your natural teeth.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Dental Implants Brandon

Age alone is rarely a barrier to having dental implants. Provided you are in reasonable general health and have sufficient jawbone density, implants can be placed in patients well into their 70s, 80s, and beyond. In fact, many older patients find implants life-changing restoring the ability to eat a full and varied diet with confidence. We will carry out a thorough health assessment during your consultation and discuss any relevant considerations.
Osseointegration is the natural biological process by which the titanium implant fuses with the surrounding bone. Titanium is uniquely biocompatible — the body does not reject it and over several weeks, living bone cells grow directly around and into the surface of the implant, anchoring it securely. This process cannot be rushed, but once complete, it creates an exceptionally stable foundation for your crown or denture. Patience at this stage is what makes the end result so durable.
Active gum disease is a contraindication for dental implant treatment, as it can compromise the success of the implant and increase the risk of a complication called peri-implantitis. However, this does not necessarily mean implants are off the table for you. We can treat your gum disease first, stabilise your gum health, and then reassess your suitability for implants. Many patients with a history of gum disease go on to have very successful implant treatment, particularly with diligent ongoing maintenance.
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching a false tooth to the two natural teeth on either side, which must be permanently prepared (shaved down) to support the bridge. An implant, by contrast, is a self-supporting structure — it does not involve any alteration to your remaining natural teeth. Implants also preserve the jawbone beneath the gap, which bridges cannot do. For these reasons, implants are generally considered the superior long-term option for most patients.
Most patients return to work and normal activities the following day. The implant placement procedure is usually completed in around an hour, and any post-operative discomfort is typically mild and managed well with over-the-counter pain relief. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days and sticking to soft foods initially, but for many patients the recovery is far more straightforward than they anticipated.
